Monsoon Rains Trigger Floods as Heatwaves Persist in North India

 



India is witnessing an unusual weather pattern this August, with widespread heavy monsoon rains bringing floods to several regions while parts of northern India continue to reel under persistent heatwaves and high humidity.

According to updates from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), extremely heavy rainfall has lashed states such as Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Gujarat, Karnataka, and parts of the Northeast. Cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru have seen severe urban flooding, disrupting transportation, forcing school closures, and prompting advisories for residents in low-lying areas. Rising river levels have also led to flood alerts in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, with parts of Varanasi and Lucknow reporting waterlogging and inundation.

In Hyderabad, regular monsoon showers have brought cooler conditions, with temperatures hovering between 22°C and 28°C. Central and southern India have reported above-average rainfall this season, while some eastern and northeastern areas are facing rainfall deficits.

At the same time, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan are experiencing heatwave-like conditions despite the monsoon, with maximum temperatures near 33°C, high humidity, and a high UV index posing health risks. Experts point to an increasing frequency of extreme weather events, with central India seeing more instances of intense rainfall that trigger flash floods and river overflows.

The IMD has issued flash flood alerts for Kerala, Karnataka, and parts of the Northeast, warning of the possibility of landslides in vulnerable hilly regions. Meanwhile, the north’s combination of high heat and moisture continues to raise concerns about heat-related illnesses.

Overall, India’s August weather paints a picture of extremes: overflowing rivers and waterlogged cities in the west and south, alongside punishing heatwaves in the north. Authorities are urging caution, with advisories in place for both flood-affected communities and those exposed to high temperatures.
