A devastating landslide struck near the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir following heavy rains, leaving at least 33 people dead and many others injured. The tragedy has cast a shadow over one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in the country, drawing shock and grief from across the nation.
Authorities confirmed that the landslide occurred after incessant rainfall triggered a massive collapse of soil and debris in the hilly terrain. Rescue teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police, and local volunteers, have been working tirelessly to recover survivors and provide medical assistance to the injured. Helicopters have also been deployed to airlift the critically wounded to nearby hospitals.
The incident has led to the temporary suspension of the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage, which attracts thousands of devotees daily. Officials said safety of pilgrims remains the top priority and the yatra will only resume after a thorough assessment of the area. Families of victims are being offered compensation, while the injured are receiving treatment under state supervision. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and assured that every possible support would be extended. Local authorities have urged residents and pilgrims to avoid travel in the region until weather conditions improve. The disaster highlights the growing risks posed by extreme weather in mountainous regions, particularly during the monsoon season, when landslides become more frequent and deadly.
